TV Wall Mounting: Should You DIY or Hire a Professional in the UK

Mounting a TV looks simple enough in a five-minute video: find a stud, screw in a bracket, hang the TV. In practice, we get called out fairly regularly to fix or redo DIY TV mounts, usually for one of a small number of recurring problems. Here is an honest look at what is actually involved, and where it makes sense to bring in a professional rather than doing it yourself.

What DIY TV mounting actually involves

A straightforward TV mount on a standard plasterboard stud wall, with the cables left visible or run through a simple cable tidy, is a genuinely reasonable DIY project for someone comfortable using a stud finder and a drill. Fixed and tilting brackets are widely available, instructions are generally clear, and the tools required are basic.

Where it gets more complicated is everything beyond that baseline: heavier or larger TVs, walls that are not standard plasterboard on timber studs, and any attempt to conceal cables inside the wall rather than behind a plastic trunking strip.

Where DIY mounts most often go wrong

The most common issue we see is a bracket fixed into plasterboard alone, without hitting a stud or using a properly rated cavity fixing. This can hold for a while, particularly with lighter TVs, but is a genuine safety risk, especially with larger screens, and we have attended more than one call-out where a TV has come away from the wall months after a DIY installation.

The second most common issue is cable routing. Surface-mounted cable trunking is a reasonable middle ground, but many DIY attempts at concealing cables inside the wall run into problems: cutting into a cavity without checking for existing pipework or wiring, or using a cable concealment kit not rated for mains power alongside low-voltage AV cables, which is a genuine electrical safety issue rather than just a cosmetic one.

The third issue, more cosmetic than safety-related, is simply getting the height and centring wrong. A TV mounted a little too high, often to clear a socket or radiator, is one of the most common regrets we hear about from homeowners who mounted a TV themselves and then decided to redo it properly later.

When DIY makes sense

If you are mounting a smaller, lighter TV on a straightforward plasterboard stud wall, are comfortable finding and fixing into studs correctly, and are happy with cables run through a simple cable tidy rather than fully concealed inside the wall, DIY is a perfectly reasonable option. The tools and brackets required are inexpensive and widely available.

When to bring in a professional

We would recommend a professional installation for larger or heavier TVs, walls that are not standard plasterboard on timber studs (solid brick, block, stone, or older lath and plaster walls all need different fixing approaches), and any project where fully concealed cabling inside the wall is the goal rather than a visible cable tidy.

It is also worth bringing in a professional if you want a socket relocated behind the TV, since this involves proper electrical work rather than just mounting hardware, and needs to be carried out or certified by a qualified electrician to meet UK wiring regulations.

What a professional installation actually adds

Beyond the safety of a correctly rated fixing for your specific wall type, the main thing a professional installation adds is the finish: fully concealed cabling with nothing visible at all, correct height and centring based on your actual seating position rather than guesswork, and, where needed, a socket relocated so there is no trailing extension lead in sight.
