Lighting is the difference between a media wall that looks like a flat-pack unit and one that looks like it was built into the room. The joinery and the TV get most of the attention when people start planning, but it's almost always the lighting that visitors comment on, the soft glow behind the panelling, the warm line under a floating shelf, the way the whole wall seems to lift off the plaster in the evening. Done well, it's subtle. Done badly, or left out entirely and bolted on afterwards, it looks exactly like what it is: an afterthought.

LED strip lighting: where it actually gets run
LED strip is the workhorse of media wall lighting and it turns up in three main places on a typical job. The first is shelf edges, run along the underside or the front lip of floating shelves so the light washes down the wall rather than shining into the room. The second is behind slatted timber or fluted panels, where the strip sits in a batten channel behind the slats so only slivers of light escape between them, creating a striped glow effect that's become one of the most requested looks we fit. The third is around a fire surround, either framing the aperture itself or run in a recess a few centimetres back from the fire opening so it highlights the surround without competing with the flame effect; this is a detail worth discussing early if you're planning one of our media walls with fireplace.
All three uses rely on the same basic component: a low-voltage LED tape, usually 12V or 24V, fed by a driver that steps mains voltage down and, ideally, allows dimming. The strip itself is inexpensive; the labour and planning around concealing it properly is where the real cost and the real difference in finish sits.
Backlighting: the halo effect against the wall
Backlighting is LED strip run behind the media wall structure itself, usually along the top or side edges of the main unit, so light spills out onto the wall behind it rather than into the room. The effect is a soft halo or cove of light framing the whole structure, which reads as depth and makes the unit look like it's floating slightly off the wall rather than sitting flush against it. It's particularly effective on darker paint or panelling because the contrast between the lit wall and the dark unit does most of the visual work. Backlighting needs a small standoff, typically 20-40mm, between the back of the unit and the wall so the light has somewhere to spread rather than being pinched flat. This is a detail that has to be built into the timber frame from the start; it's very difficult to retrofit once a unit is fixed flush to the plaster.
Match the halo to the room, not the photo
A backlit glow that looks striking in a dim photograph can feel too intense in a room with daylight and other lamps on. Ask your installer to fit a dimmer on the backlighting circuit specifically, separate from any shelf or downlight circuits, so you can turn it down to a whisper for everyday evenings and up for effect when it suits.
Shelf lighting: recessed under floating shelves
Shelf lighting is LED strip recessed into a channel cut or routed into the underside of a floating shelf, rather than simply stuck to the surface. The recess matters: strip fixed flat to the underside of a shelf is visible as a hard line of individual diodes the moment you look up at it, whereas a strip sunk a few millimetres into a routed channel and covered with a frosted diffuser produces an even wash of light with no visible dots. It's a small manufacturing step that makes a large visual difference, and it's one of the first things worth asking a joiner or supplier about if you're comparing quotes.
This kind of lighting works particularly well on media walls with open display shelving either side of the television, where it doubles as practical light for ornaments, books or a drinks tray as well as ambient lighting for the room. Downlighting: recessed spotlights within the structure
Downlights on a media wall are small recessed spotlights, usually 30-50mm fittings, set into the top of the unit or into a pelmet above the television, distinct from LED strip because they throw a directional cone of light downward rather than a diffuse wash along an edge. They're most often used to light a display niche, a piece of art hung above the TV, or simply to add a second, brighter layer of light for tasks like reading that a soft LED glow alone won't provide. A row of three or four small downlights spaced evenly along the top of a unit gives a completely different character to the same wall lit only with strip lighting, more architectural, less atmospheric.
Downlights draw more current per fitting than strip lighting and each one needs its own cut-out, cable run and, usually, its own dimmer-compatible driver or transformer if they're low voltage. They're worth specifying at the design stage rather than adding later, because retrofitting a spotlight into finished MDF or veneered panelling means cutting into a surface that's already painted or wrapped.
Warm vs cool: getting the colour temperature right
What colour LED lighting is best for a media wall?
Warm white, in the 2700K to 3000K range, is almost always the right choice for a media wall in a living room. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin, and the scale runs from warm amber tones at the low end up through neutral white and into cool, blue-tinted white at the high end; 2700K is the same warm glow as a traditional incandescent bulb, 4000K is a crisp neutral white you'd expect in a kitchen or office, and anything above 5000K starts to look distinctly blue and clinical.
The reason warm white works better here isn't just taste, it's contrast with the room. Living rooms are furnished with soft materials, warm timber tones and, in the evening, low ambient light from lamps rather than overheads, and a media wall lit at 4000K or above sits jarringly against all of that; it reads as office lighting bolted onto a domestic room. We occasionally fit a cooler white, closer to 3500K, where a client wants a more modern, gallery-like feel and the rest of the room's palette supports it, but 2700-3000K is the default recommendation for good reason and it's what we specify unless a client asks for something different.

Dimmable lighting: why fixed brightness falls short
A media wall gets used very differently at 3pm on a Sunday and 9pm on a Tuesday, and fixed-brightness LED strip can't keep up with that. Specifying a dimmable driver, rather than the cheaper fixed-output version, costs relatively little extra at the point of installation but makes an enormous difference to how usable the lighting actually is day to day: bright enough to be a genuine light source when you want it, low enough to sit as background ambience behind a film without competing with the screen.
The catch is that not every dimmer works with every driver. LED strip needs a driver rated for dimming, paired with a compatible dimmer switch, typically either a trailing-edge dimmer for mains-dimmed systems or a dedicated low-voltage dimming module for strip fed via a separate transformer. Mixing an incompatible dimmer and driver is one of the most common causes of flickering or buzzing LED strip we get called out to fix, so this is worth getting right at first fix rather than swapping parts later.
Smart lighting: app and voice control
Smart control has become a genuinely popular upgrade rather than a gimmick, mostly because a media wall typically has two or three separate lighting zones, backlighting, shelf lighting and downlights, and a smart hub or app lets you save and recall lighting scenes for each rather than juggling multiple physical dimmer switches. A common setup we fit is a smart driver or smart bulb system that ties into an existing voice assistant, so a scene like "movie night" drops the room lights and brings the media wall lighting down to a low warm glow with one command, while "reading" brings the downlights up.
It's worth deciding on smart control before first fix too, because some smart driver systems need a neutral wire or a specific low-voltage cable run back to the switch position that a standard dimmer wiring wouldn't need. Retrofitting smart control after the wall is boarded is usually possible but often means running an additional cable externally or relying on a wireless-only smart bulb solution instead of integrated strip, which limits the effects available.

Cable management: plan it before the boarding goes up
Every LED run, downlight and driver needs a cable path, and those paths have to be planned before any MDF, plasterboard or slatted panelling is fixed in place, not worked out afterwards. This is really an extension of the wider first-fix electrical planning that any good media wall installation depends on: spurs for the driver, a route back to a switch or smart hub position, and access points in case a driver ever needs replacing, all need to be marked out against the timber frame while it's still open.
The mistake we see most often from DIY attempts and rushed installs is LED strip and driver cabling added after the frame is built, meaning cables get surface-run, taped along the inside of a cavity that's too tight to route them properly, or fed through a single small hole that becomes the only access point for future maintenance. A driver that fails behind a fully boarded, painted media wall with no planned access point can mean cutting into finished panelling to replace it. Common mistakes with media wall lighting
Most lighting problems on a media wall come down to a handful of recurring decisions, not bad luck or bad products.
- Choosing cool white (4000K or above) for a cosy living room, which ends up looking like office lighting rather than ambience
- Fitting LED strip flat to a surface instead of into a recessed, diffused channel, so individual diodes are visible as hard dots
- Leaving out a dimmer to save cost, then finding the lighting is either too bright to use in the evening or not left on at all
- Treating lighting as an afterthought and trying to add it once the wall is already boarded, which limits you to surface-mounted strip and visible cabling
- Mixing an LED driver and dimmer switch that aren't rated to work together, causing flickering or an audible buzz
- Running every zone on one single switch, so you can't dim the backlighting separately from the downlights
Getting these right doesn't add much to a typical budget when it's planned from the start; it becomes far more expensive once a wall is finished and someone wants to retrofit a recess or add an access panel. Lighting for acoustic and slatted media walls

Bringing it together
The wall that looks considered rather than assembled is almost always the one where lighting was designed alongside the joinery, not chosen from a catalogue afterwards. Decide early which zones you want (backlighting, shelf lighting, downlighting, or a combination), settle on a warm 2700-3000K colour temperature unless you have a specific reason to go cooler, specify a dimmable driver from the outset, and make sure cable routes and access points are marked out before the frame is boarded.
